92-year-old 'leapling' gives advice to baby girl born on Leap Day

Mal Moore says little Delilah has so much to look forward to

PLYMOUTH, Minn — Now that the hard part is over, Libby and Dylan Amick can focus on celebrating their newborn daughter, Delilah.

Delilah joins an exclusive club that only about one in every 1,461 people are in. She was born on February 29, 2024. Which makes her a "leapling."

The staff of M Health Fairview Lakes get to check this one off.

"All my years doing labor and delivery, I've never had a leap day baby yet!" said Summer Robertson, the birthplace manager.

Libby's due date was actually on Feb. 26.

"They can come early, they can come later," she said. "I thought the chances were slim."

"It's an exclusive club," said Dylan, her dad. "I'm excited to fall in love again and introducing her to her sister."

Only every four years will their little one get to celebrate a true Feb. 29th birthday.

But she'll be in good company.

Mal Moore, celebrating his 92nd (or as he puts it, 23rd), says little baby Delilah will have so much to look celebrate.

"It warms the heart," he said. "The special Feb. 29th."

He says he celebrated his birthday every year, but on leap years, his family always did something extra special. Whether it was bringing over the neighborhood kids for birthday cake, or his dad slipping him a sip of scotch on his 16th.

"A special day," he laughs.

He was looking forward to a birthday celebration in his home, Trillium Woods, in Plymouth.

"A year older today, no four years older today!" he said.

He says when Delilah is 92, she'll be celebrating so much.
