Concern grows over missing UMD student

Duluth Police say 21-year-old Jacob Lavoie was last seen leaving Grandma's Sports Garden at approximately 12:08 a.m. Sunday, walking north towards downtown.

Concern is growing over the welfare of a University of Minnesota-Duluth college student who walked out of a bar early Sunday and hasn't been seen since.

Duluth Police say 21-year-old Jacob Lavoie of Inver Grove Heights was last seen leaving Grandma's Sports Garden at approximately 12:08 a.m., walking north towards downtown. Friends who were with him that night checked Lavoie's residence and found his car was still there.

"I called him and his phone was off," recalls friend Jordan Snelling. "And then we decided to go check his apartment. He wasn't there so we called the cops."

Organized searches have been conducted by Duluth Police, members of the St. Louis County Rescue Squad and Duluth Fire department, but so far Lavoie has not been located.

UMD student Jacob Lavoie left a bar in Duluth early Sunday and hasn't been seen since.

Residents and business owners in the vicinity are being asked to check locations around their own properties for Jacob, giving special attention to abandoned buildings, vehicles, stairwells, outbuildings, dumpsters, boats, or anywhere a person could hide. They are also asked to review security systems from midnight to 6 a.m. for a person matching Jacob’s description.

Lavoie is majoring in Business and Marketing, and was expected to graduate in the next year or two. "He's a hard working kid. Goes to school, gets his work done and then just wants to hang out with the guys really," said Snelling.

Anyone who has seen something suspicious or knows the whereabouts of Jacob Lavoie is asked to call 911 or 218-730-5560.
