Vandals damage car of hockey coach's son before State Championship game

Eden Prairie police believe the car belonging to the son of hockey coach Lee Smith was targeted by a vandal Saturday prior to the state championship game.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn — His team came up just short of a Minnesota hockey state championship.

But it's what happened before the big game that rattled Eden Prairie senior Garrett Smith.

"I completely went in shock," he said.

Garrett's car was parked at the Eden Prairie Community Center during the state tournament. Saturday morning he noticed the rear-view mirror was missing.  Scratches stretched along the front and rear doors on both sides. All four tires were slashed.

And Garrett still had a game to play that night.

"All the way up until 5 o' clock for the 7 o' clock game, it was in my head. So it was tough," Smith said.

When asked if he has any enemies, the senior said, "No, I try to be a positive person and keep away from the negativity."

On the rear windshield of Garrett's white SUV, a sticker that says Eden Prairie Eagles Hockey was also scratched and tattered.

"Five of my teammates all have hockey stickers on the back of their car and no damage was done to any of their cars," Smith said.

That indicated to Garrett that he was targeted. Likely by someone from his school. Possibly because of who his dad is -- head hockey coach Lee Smith.

"He was pretty shook up, and rightfully so," said Lee Smith. "I believe it was someone that probably had trouble with me and took it out on my son because my vehicle wasn't there."

Eden Prairie Police are investigating the vandalism as a felony because the damage tops $1,000.

But no surveillance footage captured it.

To the Smith family, the vandalism is less destruction of property, and more of a violation of personal security.

"I don't want any backlash with them or anything. I just want to know who did it just to have justice here," Garrett said.

"I'm not an eye for an eye guy, that's not what I'm worried about. I just want my son to feel safe again," said his father.

Eden Prairie Police said they believe Garrett's vehicle was targeted, and they are offering reward money for information leading to an arrest.
