Ice jams in Jordan finally busted

Flooding has persisted over the last five days as the ice chunks in the Sand Creek continued to jam up

JORDAN, Minnesota — Crews busted through the big ice jam on the Sand Creek in Jordan on Monday afternoon, easing concerns of further home flooding.

About 9 residents were still sheltered, as the city expects to pump the water out of the nearby mobile home park on Tuesday.

The flood fight in Jordan, for some, makes for all-day roadside entertainment,

As bulldozers and backhoes keep on breaking up the ice jams and trying to let the Sand Creek flow through.

"Yes it is, there's a lot of tourists coming through," said Phil Schmieg.

Water still surrounds mobile homes in the Valley Green Park as some residents need shelter and others have missed work.

"It's just so inconvenient," said Armando Alvarado.

The problem is caused when heavy rain helped break up the frozen-over creek with ice chunks much thicker than in most years.

"The ice jammed and it's been piling and compacting against each other from the creek bed on up to the top of the water level," said Jordan Police Chief Brett Empey.

"In my lifetime, I've never seen this here like this. Not like this," said Tom Klehr.

When the ice jams up, the fast-flowing tributary quickly rises and spills over its banks.

And when the ice jam is cleared, the water just as quickly drops.

Cities and Counties across the state expect more scenes like this in the next couple weeks, and hope when it does that minimal homes are affected.

Which makes it easier to watch in awe of Mother Nature.

"It's just something you never see. It's amazing. It's powerful when watch the big chunks, it's powerful to watch it," Schmieg said.
