Stillwater starts sandbagging operation Thursday

Between Thursday and Tuesday, hundreds of volunteers will fill sandbags in preparation for flooding along the St. Croix River.

Things will get busier in downtown Stillwater on Thursday, as volunteers start to fill sandbags.

The city's Public Work Director Shawn Sanders says about 300 volunteers will help fill about 45,000 sandbags.

They will be stored until needed.

Also Thursday, crews will begin building a temporary flood wall along the river.

Both the City of Stillwater and the Emergency Management department for Washington County have been keeping a close eye on the river level.

Sanders says the National Weather Service predicts a 90 percent chance that the river will go over major flood stage by the first week of April.

He says major flood stage for the St. Croix River in Stillwater is 89 feet. Minor flood stage is 87 feet.

The river is currently at 79 feet.

He says the last time there was major flooding in the city was in 2001.
