Local business owners rely on Small Business Saturday

Moth Oddities in Northeast Minneapolis Is in the same boat as many small businesses recovering from the pandemic.

MINNEAPOLIS — Small Business Saturday is a good day to celebrate and support small businesses for their contributions to their community.

Business owners say they’re relying on folks to shop small over the weekend. Many say they are still recovering from pandemic hits. 

Moth Oddities in Northeast Minneapolis Is in the same boat as many small businesses recovering from the pandemic. 

"We're on tight budgets," said co-owner Ian O'Neill.  "So we rely on word of mouth and social media to kind of get the word out."

The National Institute of Health said small businesses were disproportionately hurt by the pandemic, business owners like O'Neill hope folks will support them. 

Moth Oddities is hosting a holiday market for Small Business Saturday. 

"We're a small business and we try to support other small businesses," said O'Neill. 

Yaz Lo owns Black Cat Jewelry and will be one of the vendors at the vintage shop from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. 

"Get out there and support local," said Lo. "At the end of the day, it's about giving back." 

The good news is that 60 percent of holiday shoppers are likely to spend on Small Business Saturday, higher than 56 percent of shoppers who are likely to shop on Black Friday, according to a report by Bankrate.

Marissa Montgomery owns Montgomery Collection, a leather travel goods company.

"Being a travel-based business, the pandemic definitely impacted us," she said. "But at the same time, it's been really exciting because now people are getting back to traveling again."

Warren McLean is the President of the Northside Economic Opportunity Network. His organization is excited to help bring back Black Friday on Broadway which will host about 50 small businesses at Hawthorn Crossings Friday and Saturday. 

“It’s huge because it’s part of the Northside coming into its own," said McLean. "We’ve had huge momentum built on the Northside and that’s part of the momentum that’s being established and created."
