Getting a good night's rest starts with your sleepwear

A Minnesota-based sleepwear company shares its strategies for combating sleep struggles.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — Minnesotans know all too well that Fall means fluctuating temperatures, which can make it harder to sleep.

However, there's a Minnesota-made product that Oprah Winfrey calls one of her "favorite things" for a good night's sleep: Softies, a sleepwear line headquartered in the Twin Cities.

Softies president Tim Murphy visited KARE 11 News at 4 to talk about how their company approaches sleep struggles.

Murphy says weather and medical conditions can all play a role in whether you're warm or cold when you sleep; Murphy suggests following the four Fs when it comes to choosing sleepwear: fabric, fit, fashion, and function.

Fabric choices should come down to performance.

Murphy says if you're dealing with hot flashes, night sweats or are just too warm at night, look for PJs that are breathable, water resistant, stain resistant, fast-drying and durable - basically fitness fabric in sleepwear.

The fit of your sleepwear is also important. Murphy suggests that you don’t buy PJs that are tight and cling to you. Your PJs and loungewear should be comfortable.

Fashion won't help you get a better night's sleep, but Murphy suggests looking  for sleepwear with modesty features, in case the doorbell rings unexpectedly.

Finally: function. Murphy says layering is important with Minnesota's unpredictable weather; so having layers to add or remove can help you get a good night's sleep.
