A Minneapolis man is dead after being struck while outside of his vehicle on I-694 in Oakdale.

The State Patrol has identified the man killed in a 3-vehicle crash that shut down a major freeway in the east metro Sunday.

Investigators say 46-year-old Darryl Leroy Bell of Minneapolis was outside his vehicle on the right shoulder of northbound Interstate 694 near 10th St. in Oakdale with the rear driver's side door open when the driver of a Chevy pickup veered onto the shoulder and hit Bell's 2011 Lincoln MKS.

Bell was thrown down the shoulder, and was declared dead on the scene by first responders.

After the pickup struck Bell's vehicle it careened back into traffic, hitting a Buick Regal operating in the left lane. Neither the driver of the truck, a 70-year-old man from Stillwater, or the Buick driver, a 28-year-old woman from Sacramento, CA, was injured in the crash.

State Patrol troopers continue to investigate the fatal incident to determine if criminal charges are warranted.

I-694 was closed for hours as the accident scene was reconstructed and cleaned up.
