MN Lottery executive director appointed

Gov. Mark Dayton has tapped an experienced hand to lead the Minnesota Lottery as he searches for a full-time replacement.

Twin Cities businessman Michael Vekich has been appointed interim director of the Minnesota Lottery until a permanent replacement can be found.

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Gov. Mark Dayton has tapped an experienced hand to lead the Minnesota Lottery as he searches for a full-time replacement.

Dayton named Michael Vekich to head up the agency on Monday. Vekich served as the agency's interim director for an eight-month stint in 2004 after being appointed by then-governor Tim Pawlenty. He currently runs his own management and accounting firm in Minneapolis.

Dayton says Vekich served the state well in his short tenure atop the lottery agency.

“Michael Vekich has previously served the state of Minnesota with distinction in this role,” said Governor Dayton. “I thank him for his willingness to again serve the state as Interim Executive Director of the Minnesota Lottery, until a permanent director is found.”

Vekich fills a leadership void at the state lottery after its director resigned amid questions about his work expenses. Ed Van Petten stepped down last month after it was revealed he was reimbursed for more than $7,000 for staying at timeshare units he owned.

Van Petten had held the job since 2012. The state is searching for a permanent replacement.

Michael Vekich is CEO of Vekich Chartered and is an experienced senior executive known for innovative and effective leadership of complex organizations. He has a proven record of strong financial management and organizational strategy.

In 2004, Mr. Vekich was named interim Executive Director for the Lottery by former Governor Tim Pawlenty. During that eight month assignment Mr. Vekich created the Lottery’s first ever strategic plan, significantly increasing revenues.

Michael Vekich holds a B.A. in accounting and business administration from the University of Minnesota, Duluth. A Certified Public Accountant, he serves as a financial and business advisor to several public and private company boards, including the Minnesota State Colleges & Universities Board of Trustees. He was a candidate for Governor during the 2002 election.
