There's no mail delivery and banks are closed, but most major stores will stay open for shoppers on Memorial Day.

WASHINGTON — Memorial Day, honoring U.S. military members who died while in service, will be celebrated on Monday, May 27, 2024. 

The holiday can be a somber day for some Americans, while others celebrate it as the unofficial start to summer with parades, cookouts, beach days and family gatherings. 

It's a federal holiday, so government offices will close and there won't be any mail delivery, but many stores will be open for last-minute grocery runs.

What is Memorial Day? 

Celebrated on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day honors those who lost their lives while in service. 

For decades, the holiday was celebrated on May 30. It wasn't until 1968 when Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which made it an official federal holiday and changed it to be celebrated on the last Monday of May. 

The holiday originated years after the Civil War and was originally called Decoration Day.
