ST. PAUL, Minn. - The average cost for a year of school lunches is around $500. That amount, especially when multiplied to account for more than one kid, can be unaffordable for some parents.
That's why many schools offer free or reduced school lunch programs, to ensure that all students have a lunch.
St. Paul City School is using another method to ensure all its students eat. It set up a GoFundMe account to help pay off students' accruing lunch debt.
The goal is to reach $10,000. So far, it has raised almost half of that goal.
In the description, St. Paul City School explains that most of its students qualify for free or reduced price lunch programs, but "a portion of students remain unable to apply or qualify."
The school will be serving cheese sandwiches to students with negative lunch balances starting next week.
It says its passion and goal is "to avoid the social stigma and nutritional impacts of this alternative lunch practice."
