Mars makes its closest approach in 15 years

Mars will be 35.8 million miles away from Earth tonight. Believe it or not, that's pretty close.

Mars, the fourth planet from the sun, is going to be making its closest approach to Earth in 15 years on Monday night.

While it will still be a distant 35.8 million miles away from us, you can easily spot it with your naked eye in the southern sky after sunset.

Mars is looking a little different than usual, too. Why? Because there is a giant dust storm that has been circling the entire planet! Astronomers don't really know why or how long it will take before it goes away.

For the next several weeks Mars will be brighter than Jupiter due to its proximity from Earth. If you can, try and check our our nighttime neighbor with a telescope.
