Metro area businesses announce weather-related closures to keep employees, customers safe

"We realized there was no way we could ask employees to come in today," said Sean Ryan, with Saint Paul Brewing and Can Can Wonderland.

HOPKINS, Minn. — As a foot or more of snow piles up across the metro, businesses like Amy's Cupcake Shoppe in Hopkins put out a message on Facebook for customers, saying it was closing early due to weather.

"We're supposed to be open until 6 p.m., but because of the weather, we decided to close at 4, so that our two closing high schoolers don't have to drive all the way over here," said Head Baker, Amanda Green.

Green said with the roads and dangerous conditions, customers are also choosing to stay home.

"Not as many people today in the shop," she said.

But Amy's Cupcake Shoppe isn't the only business closing early due to the snow. Other businesses, including several restaurants and the Maplewood Mall announced weather-related closures Wednesday.

"We realized there was no way we could ask employees to come in today," said Sean Ryan, assistant director of operations at Saint Paul Brewing and Can Can Wonderland.

The businesses issued a similar announcement, even rescheduling the new open mic music night for another day.

"That does affect our numbers, but safety of our customers is number one," Ryan said.

As people across the state start digging out of the massive piles of snow...

"I got stuck in my apartment complex earlier and I was an hour late to work," said Green, adding that she's looking forward to reopening their doors.

"Back to our normal hours hopefully tomorrow," said Green.
