Rain, wind force partial closure of Duluth's Canal Park

Standing water led police to close several streets.

DULUTH, Minn. — Heavy rain and strong winds led the City of Duluth to close a portion of Canal Park on Monday.

The Duluth Fire Department said they took about 130 calls related to wind and power-line issues. Officials say at the height of the storm, winds reached 60 miles-per-hour and about 9,000 customers were without power.

According to Minnesota Power spokesperson Kelley Eldien, as of 7 p.m., about 1,600 customers are still without power.

"Due to the number of outages, some customers may be without power until late this evening or early tomorrow morning," said Eldien.

Standing water forced the closure of Canal Park Drive, Buchanan St., and Morse St. Brighton Beach was also closed to traffic and pedestrians.

Police also closed access to Park Point, but officials say that the roads have since reopened.
