Better late than never: Our picks for Monday's Primetime Emmy Awards

MINNEAPOLIS — January: That familiar time when people reflect on the year prior and plan for the one ahead; kids return to school from break; the NFL playoffs are in full swing and awards season is just kicking off.

However, there is one unique addition to January's regularly scheduled programs this year: the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Anthony Anderson.

The ceremony was supposed to be held on Sept. 18, 2023, but was rescheduled due to last summer's writers and actors strike.

Technically, the award show could have happened last fall since it's under a different SAG-AFTRA agreement, but pulling off an award show telecast such as the Emmys during a double strike was impractical, leading to the late addition to January's award calendar.

The presentation (Jan. 25) comes after the Golden Globes (Jan. 7), Critic’s Choice Awards (Jan. 14), and before the BAFTA (Feb. 18) and Oscar (March 10) awards ceremonies.

Voting for the Primetime Emmys closed last August, which makes it difficult to predict winners.

Shows like “Better Call Saul,” “Ted Lasso,” “Barry” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” wrapped their final seasons, while this year could be the only time “Jury Duty” shows up. Hulu's “The Bear” is nominated for its first season — although the second had already dropped before voting closed.

HBO leads major nominations — “Succession” with 27 nominations, alone. “The Last of Us,” the first live-action video game adaption to be nominated, has 24; “The White Lotus” has 23; and “Barry” has 11. Pedro Pascal also became the most-nominated Latino actor in a single year.

That said, we at KARE 11 watch a lot of television (SHOCKER), so I asked the newsroom to tell me who they thought would take home statues Monday night.
