MINNEAPOLIS — The Hennepin Theatre Trust announced a new season of Broadway showstoppers will come through downtown Minneapolis this year, including the world premiere of the stage adaptation of Prince's "Purple Rain."
The Bank of America on Hennepin series includes 10 other Broadway favorites, including "Back to the Future: The Musical," "Beauty and the Beast," "Some Like it Hot," "Life of Pi," and others.
Rumors about a "Purple Rain" stage adaptation started making the rounds in early January and were soon confirmed by Broadway officials. Just a month later, it was announced that Minneapolis' State Theatre would present the pre-Broadway, world premiere show sometime in 2025.
“We are more than thrilled and proud to present 'Purple Rain' in its hometown next year before it makes its way to Broadway,” said Todd Duesing, Hennepin Theatre Trust president and CEO, adding, "As the birthplace of the legendary musician and songwriter, and the setting of the renowned movie that captivated the world, Minnesota will see everybody literally dancing in the streets in celebration of seeing 'Purple Rain' transform from screen to stage."
In addition to single-show tickets, Broadway super fans have the option to purchase an eight-show subscription package that includes:
- Back to the Future: The Musical, Sept. 10-22, 2024 (two weeks)
- Some Like It Hot, Oct. 15-20, 2024
- Parade, Jan. 21-26, 2025 (North American Tour premiere)
- Life of Pi, March 4-9, 2025
- Purple Rain, spring 2025 (pre-Broadway world premiere, State Theatre)
- & Juliet, May 13-18, 2025
- Kimberly Akimbo, July 8-13, 2025
- Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Aug. 5-17, 2025 (two weeks)
Optional shows that can be added to a subscription package:
- Les Misérables, Nov. 19 – Dec. 1, 2024 (two weeks)
- The Book of Mormon, Dec. 17–22, 2024
- Hadestown, Feb, 11-16, 2025
All tickets for the 2024-2025 season will go on sale later this spring.
