Animal Humane Society's Walk for Animals raises more than half a million dollars

Last year, dogs couldn't attend because of the canine flu.

SAINT PAUL, Minn — Thousands of people came out with their furry loved ones to raise money for the Animal Humane Society.

Saturday marked the 53rd Walk for Animals at the Minnesota State Fair Grounds, the nonprofits' largest fundraiser of the year.

The dogs were back this year too, after last year officials banned dogs in an effort to limit the spread of canine flu.

"We did see a lot of critters, a lot of cats, but no dogs," said Brittany Baumann, public relations strategist with the Animal Humane Society. "So this year, the dogs are back and we're thrilled to see the dogs and all the dog owners returning to walk this year."

Fittingly before the walk started, it was raining cats and dogs.

"It's always amazing to see how many people come out with or without their animals," said Baumann. "Just the celebration of the day is amazing. Seeing all of these pets and smiling faces, even on a day like to a day like today. This is really what walk is all about."

As of this afternoon, the humane society said it raised more than half a million dollars. There was also 75 vendors at the fair as well.
