Grow with KARE: Low-light houseplants

Some ideas for indoor plants that don't require a lot of sunlight.

MINNEAPOLIS — The right plant in the right place… that’s the secret to success. And if you don’t have bright windows for houseplants, choose some from this list of indoor plants that can live and even thrive in low-light conditions.

The Sansevieria family is almost foolproof for beginner growers. It requires very little water and tolerates the dark corners of your house that need some brightening up. You probably have heard of snake plant, or Mother in Law’s tongue. That’s a Sansevieria.

One of my favorites… spider plants are easy to grow and very tolerable of low light. Some have variegated or even curly leaves if you’re looking for something a bit special.

English Ivy also needs very little light. It does want some humidity though so give it a mist once in a while along with regular watering.

Cast iron plant gets its name for how easy it is to grow. It can tolerate a lot and is a great choice for beginner plant parents. This is a great choice for a north-facing window.

Not many flowering plants can tolerate low light, but peace lily can! What they do need is quite a bit of water.

If you have a low-light space that stays relatively warm, the delicate leaves of a maidenhair fern would be a good choice.

If you’re looking for a vining plant, choose a philodendron or a pothos. They look very similar and are hard to tell apart.

And if you’re looking for something trendy… try a ZZ plant. They’re all the rage.
