Grow with KARE: Tips for raised garden beds

Good advice from both Pam and Michael to add a layer of wire mesh or hardwire cloth on the bottom to keep mice and voles out.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — Here’s a few of the great tips you all had and we agree with!

•  Sammy says, Cover bottom with newspaper to kill grass, then layer of gravel, layer of sticks, small logs, then good soil mixed with good compost.

•  Matt adds not to go cheap on the soil. Couldn’t agree more!

•  Good advice from both Pam and Michael to add a layer of wire mesh or hardwire cloth on the bottom to keep mice and voles out.

•  Lisa says fence the beds if you have bunnies!

•  From Ellen, use mulch to keep the beds from drying out.

•  You’ll have to add more soil and compost each year. Thanks Dana for that advice.

•  So smart from Jane, leave enough space between to mow!

Our group is the best! Thanks for helping each other out and keep asking questions! Gardening is a constant learning experience. Don’t believe anyone who says they know it all.
