4 dead after weekend shootings in Minneapolis

Four people are dead after three separate weekend shootings in Minneapolis.

MINNEAPOLIS -- A Sunday morning shooting that left two people dead brought the total number of homicides in Minneapolis this weekend up to four.

Friday around 7:20 p.m. officers responded to the 1800 block of Riverside Avenue on a report of shots fired. Officers found Liban Mohamed Abdulahi, 32, of Burnsville dead inside a car. Police say several people were in the area at the time of the shooting.

"We know that there are people that were out here that saw things. We implore of them to come forward and share that information with us," said John Elder, spokesperson for the Minneapolis Police Department.

Later that night, around 11:45 p.m., police responded to a report of shots fired around the 2000 block of Washington Avenue North. Officers found a man dead on the sidewalk and another man hurt from a gunshot wound. Police say another man and woman also arrived to area hospitals with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

Family members identified the victim Sunday as Steven Fields, 42, of Bloomington. Friends and family called him "Bruh" and "bruh man."

"My whole family's numb, hurt, broke down, shut down. We don't know how to feel," said Lawanda Harvey, Fields' cousin.

Harvey said Fields was a genuine person and a sweetheart who loved the community. Other family members described him as a great man who was quiet and worked at a hotel.

Sunday afternoon, friends and family gathered at the spot where Fields died for a vigil.

"It's been really a busy week. A sad week," said K.G. Wilson, a peace activist in the Twin Cities. Wilson organized the vigil with United in Peace Inc. Minneapolis and A Mother's Love.

Wilson said he was told from family members that Fields "came out to smoke a cigarette and got caught in the crossfire, I guess between an argument and an altercation between some other people."

Police say the suspect or suspects ran away before officers got there.

Then on Sunday morning, police responded to the 2600 block of Emerson Avenue North on a report of shots fired. When officers arrived around 9:45 a.m. they found a man dead from a gunshot wound and two men injured. They were taken to North Memorial Medical Center where one of them later died.

According to Elder, one person is in custody related to Sunday's shooting.

"This weekend has been an anomaly," Elder said.

Elder said at this point, police do not believe the homicides are connected.

No arrests have been made from Friday night's shootings, but Elder said investigators were following up on "strong leads" in both cases.
