Brothers charged in Coon Rapids triple murder

A criminal complaint says 19-year-old Omari Shumpert shot one of the victims in the head, while his 31-year-old brother Demetrius Shumpert aided in the crime.

COON RAPIDS, Minn. — Two brothers are now charged for their roles in a triple murder that claimed the lives of a mother, her husband and son in Coon Rapids.

Criminal complaints filed in Anoka County Wednesday say 19-year-old Omari Malik Shumpert and his 31-year-old sibling Demetrius Trenton Shumpert took part in the Jan. 26 shooting spree, which ended in the deaths of 42-year-old Shannon Patricia Jungwirth, her 20-year-old son Jorge Alexander Reyes-Jungwirth, and Shannon Jungwirth's 39-year-old husband Mario Alberto Trejo Estrada.

Investigators say both Shumpert brothers were captured on surveillance video taking part in the killings, with Omari pistol-whipping one of the victims, and then subsequently shooting him in the head when that person tried to fight back.

The complaint filed against Demetrius Shumper said he also was armed with a gun, pistol whipped another of the victims and forced the female victim to open cabinets while demanding money.

Prosecutors earlier charged 37-year-old Alonzo Mingo with three counts of murder in the case, painting him as the leader of the operation.

Along with the surveillance video, prosecutors say they have DNA evidence and phone records that tie the Shumperts to the triple murder. When arrested and questioned by police, both denied involvement and Omari Shumpert claimed he had never seen Mingo before. Demetrius Shumpert admitted to knowing Mingo but said he hadn't seen him for a month or so.

Coon Rapids police were sent to a home on the 200 block of 94th Avenue Northwest just before 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 26 after dispatchers received a 911 call with a female voice in the background of what sounded like a domestic situation.

Arriving officers found a man in the doorway of the residence dead of at least one gunshot wound to the head. A second man was found shot to death in an office, and a woman was discovered dead in a bedroom. She had also been shot in the head.

The complaint says two small children under the age of five were located inside the home unharmed.

Investigators recovered video from a pole camera mounted across the street and say it captured a blue Nissan Altima drive up and park in front of the residence at 12:21 PM. Three male suspects are seen exiting the vehicle, two of them wearing clothing similar to a UPS delivery driver uniform, and entering the house. Police said one of the men was carrying a cardboard box like he was delivering a package.

Surveillance video shows all three men exit the home at approximately 12:28 PM and leave in the Nissan, which was registered to Alonzo Mingo.

Although prosecutors have not specifically named a motive for the killings, search warrants in the case indicate victim Mario Alberto Trejo Estrada was being investigated by a metro drug task force for the alleged trafficking of narcotics, and suggest he may have been connected to a Mexican drug cartel.
