Teen killed in early morning Minneapolis shooting

Police say the 14-year-old boy was shot at a gas station in northeast Minneapolis around 3 a.m. and died hours later at a hospital.

MINNEAPOLIS — A 14-year-old boy is dead after being shot early Friday morning at a gas station in northeast Minneapolis.

Police say squads were dispatched to the 2600 block of University Ave. NE around 3 a.m. after reports of shots fired. Arriving officers found the teen laying outside an SUV suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. They performed medical aid until paramedics arrived and transported the boy to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he died three hours later.

Investigators say early information suggests that the 14-year-old was in the SUV with other occupants when a second vehicle drove into the gas station parking lot and someone inside opened fire. At this point it appears no one else was wounded in the incident.

"Teenagers, Kias and Hyundais, and guns have become a common recipe for violent crime and tragedy,” said Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara in a statement released Friday afternoon. “The death of a teenager out on the street is outrageous and totally unacceptable. The MPD will aggressively investigate this incident to its logical conclusion and do all we can to bring some sense of justice for the victim and his loved ones, but we all must work together to end this trend of youth violence.”

MPD said a woman in her 30s was arrested and booked for an unrelated warrant. Investigators are working to determine how she is related to this incident. The department crime lab gathered evidence at the scene while officers attempted to locate witnesses to the fatal shooting.
