MINNEAPOLIS - Several tents at the Minneapolis homeless encampment were destroyed by fire on Monday afternoon.
Minneapolis Fire Chief John Fruetel said the report of tents on fire at the camp at 26th and Hiawatha came in at about 3:15 p.m. Crews were able to knock down the fire shortly, but Fruetel said eight to 10 tents were destroyed.
One person was brought to the hospital for smoke inhalation but no other injuries were reported.
There was propane in the area, but investigators are still determining whether that was the cause. Fruetel said fires have been a concern since the camp was established, and he urged people to avoid having open flames.
City leaders have been working on plans to relocate the people living at the homeless camp, but have pushed back the deadline in recent months.
The St. Paul homeless encampment was cleared out by authorities on Thursday, and some people living there told KARE 11 they were moving over to the Minneapolis camp.
