Galentine's Day event brings women together to help homeless

On Wednesday night, there is an opportunity to volunteer your time to help local homeless women.

MINNEAPOLIS — Feminine hygiene products are often overlooked donations to homeless women, yet they're always needed. A group of women is gathering to assemble kits for hundreds of women in need.

If you're looking for a way to spread the love the day before Valentine's Day, there's an opportunity to do so in Minneapolis.

HandsOn Twin Cities, a volunteer center, is hosting a 'Galentine's Day' event at WeWork Uptown from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

There, women will assemble 500 kits filled with feminine hygiene products such as pads and tampons.

"The need is much bigger than we think," said Tracy Nielsen, executive director of HandOn Twin Cities.

"They're very needed and people are very grateful for receiving them," said Deborah Moses, executive director of House of Charity, which serves homeless men and women. The House of Charity serves about 100 women each year.

The kits will go to organizations such as House of Charity and The Link.

"You can come out, enjoy a glass of wine, have fun with your friends, pack some feminine hygiene kits and then learn about your next volunteer opportunity that could help provide services to homeless women in the Twin Cities community," Nielsen said.

- Project for Pride in Living

- People Serving People

- The Arc Minnesota
