Therapists go virtual to connect with patients

Therapists say virtual therapy or telehealth does come with challenges.

MINNESOTA, USA — These challenging times can take a toll on our mental well-being.

"There's ambiguity about almost everything so people struggle with ambiguity," said Nick Wallace with All In Therapy Clinic in Minnetonka.

"We could all be easily isolated," said Jen Atherton, a counselor in Maple Grove.

Both are trying to continue providing their services while also trying to keep their distance.

"So it's very important that people find a way to continue their relationship with their therapist and not start stumping their feelings," said Wallace. "The goal here is to try and find a way to continue helping people in a way that is A. accessible and B. that really works."

Nick and Jen have now moved to telehealth or virtual therapy with their clients. Seeing their patients through video.

They say it has been a success for the most part.

"People were open to the idea to telehealth and they were like I'm so glad we could make this work," said Atherton.

However the adjustment can be tough at times.

"Yeah sometimes the video will lag or we'll stop altogether on one of our ends," said Atherton.

"For this, experiential forms of therapy can be a bit more difficult," said Wallace.

"Insurance issues and billing and not knowing for certain if we're going to be reimbursed by a certain insurance company or policy," said Atherton.

The most important message is that therapists are working to be there for you

"If you need the support," said Atherton. "We're still here."
