Fairview Health Services terminating 250 positions across organization

The giant nonprofit said the move was partly due to "tremendous pressures" that hospitals face now.

MINNEAPOLIS — Fairview Health Services, one of the largest health care systems in the country and based in Minneapolis, announced Thursday that it's getting rid of 250 jobs across the organization.

The giant nonprofit said the move was partly due to "tremendous pressures" that hospitals face now.

Fairview officials said the number of eliminated positions represents less than 1 percent of the health system's overall workforce.

Officials also said that most of the eliminated jobs are not full-time positions.

The employees who lost their jobs will receive support, retraining, "job search assistance, resume and interview training, and priority hiring opportunities for one of the 1,600 available positions in our system," according to the release.

Fairview currently has over 32,000 employees and operates ten hospitals, forty-eight primary care clinics, and several specialty clinics in Minnesota.

Fairview sent KARE 11 this statement Thursday afternoon:

Fairview continues to take thoughtful, deliberate steps to strengthen our organization and ensure that we can operate sustainably in a health care environment that is facing tremendous pressures. An important and necessary part of this work is aligning our workforce to evolving strategic priorities, all while addressing the demands of inflation, including increasing labor costs, and payer reimbursements that don't keep pace with inflation. As we evaluate operations, prioritize our patients, and support the team members who care for them, we must evolve as a team. Today's announcement of changes across our organization is a difficult but necessary step in building a strong and sustainable future for Fairview.
