This weekend will be all about bats at the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Bloomington, Friday evening will feature a science night where you can learn about our bats in Minnesota and even see how the DNR studies them.

"We're going to have a crew from the Minnesota DNR and they are going to have their big nets up some bats and releasing them," said Jill Utrup. Biologist with the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

Then on Saturday, the Refuge will host its 2nd Annual Bat Festival.

"Similar to last year we are going to have the live bat shows every hour. People will have the opportunity to see some live bats up close. A fruit bat that not found here, and a few big brown bats that are native here to Minnesota," said Jill.

If you see bats flying around your house on a warm summer night, they are doing more good than bad for our environment.

They are amazing consumers of pests they eat a ton of insects. Every night they can consume up to their body weight in pests and insects.

In addition to the bats on display, there will be hands on activities, a replica bat cave, and face painting all for free.
