1 dead after officer-involved shooting in north Minneapolis

When offers responded to a 911 call they found a woman who had been shot, and an armed man nearby.

MINNEAPOLIS — Investigators are on the scene of an officer-involved shooting in the Hawthorne neighborhood in north Minneapolis.

Minneapolis Police spokesman John Elder says dispatchers received two notifications of shots fired on the 1100 block of 25th Ave. N. at 2:49 a.m. Those shot-spotter notifications were followed by a 911 report of a women who'd been shot on the 2400 block of Emerson Ave. N.

When offers arrived they found the injured victim and an armed man outside. According to Elder there was a confrontation, at least one officer fired their weapon and the armed suspect died on scene.

The woman victim was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is leading the investigation, as is common practice in officer-involved shootings.

No officers were injured in the incident. Elder says body cams captured what happened, but that video will not be available until after the investigation is complete.

For some perspective, crime data from the Minneapolis Police Department says there have been 141 violent crimes in the Hawthorne neighborhood from Jan. 1 to July 30, 2019. Those numbers are up 34% from the same period last year.
