2 teens wounded in chaotic shooting and crash involving stolen Kias

A family representative says both teens are expected to fully recover.

MINNEAPOLIS — The two teens shot Thursday night in a chaotic incident in North Minneapolis - involving two stolen Kias are both expected to survive.

The shooting took place around 7 p.m. in the Jordan neighborhood on Irving Avenue North, according to Minneapolis Police. Officers said they found three damaged cars at the scene - two were stolen Kias, the other was an unoccupied parked car.

Officers found a 16-year-old male with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds at the scene, as well as a 17-year-old with a life-threatening gunshot injury. Both were taken to North Memorial for treatment. A family representative says they are both expected to fully recover.

"It's ridiculous, it's a broken record," Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said in a statement. "Stolen Kias, stolen Hyundais, juveniles, and guns involved, and we see the result. It was earlier in the evening, still light out at the time. There were people that were outside. There were kids outside. Thankfully, no one who was not involved was injured here. But it could have easily changed with people out on the street.”

Investigators said they found gunshot damage on vehicles and homes near the intersection.

Neighbor Tony Mcjilton saw it and heard it.

"We heard cars racing down the street here, like they do, then there was gunfire," Mcjilton said. "I looked out my window as that white car went through a tree and ended up where it is."

A bullet-riddled white Kia, which police said was stolen, slammed into a parked car and pushing that up into a yard.

"Later the officer found another car that was abandoned on Knox Ave on the sidewalk," said MPD Chief Brian O'Hara.

That Kia, missing its license plates, was also stolen, O'Hara said.

"It's clear this is involving at least two stolen cars with gunfire from at least one of them, possibly both," O'Hara said.

Family representatives of the teens who were shot says one was grazed on his head and the other was shot in the back but is now in stable condition and will be OK.

"There were multiple people in that white car. One ran away. The people in the other car ran away," Mcjilton observed.

Police K9 officers were able to track down one of the teens and arrest him. He hasn't been charged yet as investigators are still trying to determine who were the shooters.

Police said they arrested a juvenile several blocks away after K-9 officers tracked them down. Officials have yet to say if that person is connected to the shooting.
