According to a preliminary investigation from the agency, a group of officers "came upon" Dale while he was talking in the road with a hatchet. After the officers made contact with him, Dale allegedly ran at them.

Officer Nick Fladland of the Crookston Police Department fired his department handgun, striking Dale multiple times. Fladland has five years of law enforcement experience and is on critical incident leave, said the BCA.

Officer Alex Rudnik with the Crookston police deployed his taser and Polk County Sheriff's Deputy fired "less-lethal" rounds at Dale. They have 10 and five years of law enforcement experience, respectively.

A hatchet was recovered from the scene, according to the BCA.
