RICE COUNTY, Minn. — Three adults and six young people were rescued from the Cannon River Saturday after one of the party's canoes tipped over, leaving them clinging to a tree in the water.

Deputies from the Rice County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a capsized canoe around 11:30 a.m. Saturday, according to a press release. When the first deputies arrived on the river near the 18000 block of Cabot Avenue, they found several people in the water.

When officers spoke to an adult involved in the incident they learned nine people had set out from the Two Rivers Park in Faribault in canoes and kayaks on a trip to Northfield. Officials learned that two canoes got tangled in two different downed trees in the water, causing them to capsize.

Each canoe carried one adult and one juvenile, police said. One of the juveniles tried to help one of the canoe groups, but in the process capsized his own kayak and fell into the water.

Everyone in the water was able to grab onto downed trees in the water until first responders arrived to rescue them. Everyone was located by rescuers and there were no reported injures, officials said.

All members of the party told officials they were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident.

Rice County Sheriff Jesse Thomas said in a statement that anyone on the river should use extreme caution, and consider their safety and that of the first responders who must work to rescue capsized or stranded individuals as the Cannon River is filled with unseen debris.

Minnesota law requires a U.S. Coast Guard-approved, properly sized, and easily accessible life jacket for each person on a boat, and all children under ten are required to wear an approved life jacket when a boat is underway.
