DOJ partners with Minneapolis for public safety initiative

In a statement released Friday, MPD said its officers will receive "training and technical assistance" from the U.S. Department of Justice.

MINNEAPOLIS — The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced it will provide intensive training to members of the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) as part of the agency's 2023 National Public Safety Partnership initiative.

In a statement released Friday, the MPD said its officers will receive "training and technical assistance (TTA) in the areas of gun violence, criminal justice collaboration, investigations, constitutional policing, community engagement, federal partnerships, crime analysis, and technology to identify strategies that target gun, drug, and gang violence."

Minneapolis is the latest city to partner with DOJ, which has already waged successful campaigns in more than 40 other cities across the country, according to the statement.

"We look forward to using this partnership to enhance the existing work with U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger, as well as all our federal, state, county, and community-based partners to reduce the serious crime while earning people’s trust,” said Minneapolis Chief of Police Brian O’Hara.

The three-year partnership is scheduled to launch this month, with Los Angeles Police Department Police Chief Beatrice Grimala serving as Minneapolis' strategic site liaison.

The DOJ said the safety initiative "enables DOJ to provide jurisdictions of different sizes and diverse needs with data-driven, evidence-based strategies tailored to the unique local needs of participating cities to build their capacities to address violent crime challenges."

Earlier this year, the city entered into a federal consent decree with the DOJ, requiring sweeping policy changes to the Minneapolis Police Department. The agreement came more than three years after George Floyd was murdered by a former MPD officer in May 2020.

Under the consent decree, it's believed that Minneapolis will become the first city in American history to look to both state and federal oversight for policing practices.
