LUTSEN, Minn. — More than a month after a fire burned down the historic Lutsen Resort Lodge, state officials continue their investigation at the scene.

Minnesota Department of Public Safety State Fire Marshal investigators will begin digging through the debris starting on Monday, March 11., according to a release.

“Lutsen community members will notice crews coming and going from the fire scene,” said State Fire Marshal Daniel Krier, in a statement. “We are dedicated to preserving the integrity of the investigation, and we ask people to give us the space we need to complete this work.”

The fire has been shrouded in controversy since the lodge was burned down.

Just days after the destructive fire, state officials released a report showing the lodge had three unresolved code violations.

The three violations involved a sprinkler system inspection report, a fire alarm system and a replacement emergency light near one of the rooms. In the release, fire officials said it's too early to know whether any of the three code violations were partly to blame.

Later that week, the Cook County Sheriff's Office sent out a press release describing the Lutsen Lodge area as a "crime scene", before saying the release was worded incorrectly and that the sheriff's office just wanted people to stay away from the site.
