Mom flies cross-country to support her daughter in Chanhassen's musical

Behind the scenes, a mother follows her daughter across the country as she chases her musical theater dreams.

CHANHASSEN, Minn. — "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical" is going on right now at the Chanhassen Dinner Theater through September.

But the real story is just as heartwarming as the stage musical — and KARE 11's Alicia Lewis got to sit down with Monet Sabel, who plays Carole King, and her mom.

"A momager they call it, yeah that's what I am," Sue Sabel said. She lives on the opposite coast from her daughter Monet but as Carole King sings it, "Where you lead, I will follow."

Sue has followed her daughter across the country as she chases her musical theater dreams, landing the two of them in Chanhassen, Minn.

"I've seen [the musical] probably 25 times at least because she was on the Broadway tour so whenever she was Carole or any character we would fly in," Sue said. She said she takes a plane about once a month to watch her daughter play the legendary Carole King.

Monet said her mother's support has been there since the very beginning.

"From a young age, my mom was introducing me to the best singers and songwriters of the time, including Carole King and Joanie Mitchell and James Taylor, so I was always singing around the house and then pretty early on I started taking classes at this community theatre in southern California where I grew up and I would do musicals there every summer," Monet said.

Sue, of course, has seen them all.

"Ragtime, Crazy for You, Sweeny Todd, she was in Music Man, Dorothy in Wizard of Oz, Annie..." Sue said.

"It's such a gift to have my mom be able to travel all of the time and see my shows," Monet said. "She'll be here for Mother's Day and I'm so excited it's the best treat. It'll give me a little piece of home when I'm away doing these long jobs... It's a beautiful life."
