Leap year trifecta! Minnesota family celebrates 3 generations with leap birthdays

Only about 5 million people worldwide were born on Feb. 29, but this family has three of them.

MINNEAPOLIS — Let's give it up for Minnesota's birthday girls!

Antonia Stevens is turning 11, Tonya Berzat is turning 14, and Elizabeth Stevens in turning 22.

That is — if you're going by leap birthday standards.

In reality, Antonia is turning 44, Tonya is turning 56, and Elizabeth is turning 88.

That's right — one family, 3 generations — and three leap birthdays.

"How crazy is it that all of y'all have leap birthdays? Like, how does that happen?" KARE 11 Sunrise anchor Jason Hackett said.

"I guess we all was doing the nasty at the same time," Elizabeth said.

Having a leap birthday is pretty rare. Only about 5 million people worldwide were born on Feb. 29.

Your odds of being born on that day – 1 in 1,461.

But the odds of three so-called "leaplings" of being from one family... well, you do the math.

So if your birthday comes around only once every 4 years, according to the calendar, how do you celebrate in a non-leap year?

"I like to pick the date that works best for my schedule," Tonya said. "So sometimes I'll celebrate on March 1 because it just works out better for me that way."

Antonia said either Feb. 28 or March 1 work for her.

"I celebrate on both days. People call me and text me on both days. So I celebrate them both."

She said she's deciding to treat herself this year.

"Since my birthday only comes once every 4 years, I wanted to try to do something special this year," Antonia said. "So I was like you know what, I'm going to take myself on a cruise."

Tonya and Elizabeth are keeping it more low-key, and reflecting on everything life has given them.

"I am blessed," Elizabeth said. "I'm blessed to have 6 kids, 22 grand, 13 greats and one great-great, so I am truly blessed."

So if you see them around town, wish them a happy birthday.

After all, you'll have to wait until 2028 to get another chance.

"I share a birthday with my cousin and my grandmother." Antonia said. "And to be able to share this day with them I think is just really special, and I love them very much."
