Anoka teen goes viral when dad mixes up the gifts

"I opened it and it was this giant trophy and I was like, "'Did I win something like best daughter award?'" said Anoka Middle school student Karley Olufson.

COON RAPIDS, Minn — By now, you likely know about the Stanley Cup craze. These cups are the not-so-cheap drinkware that people are waiting in lines for, matching their cup colors to their daily outfits, and even in some cases, even stealing them.

But before you roll your eyes at yet another Stanley Cup story — this one is hilarious. A local girl went viral online for the best Stanley Cup mix-up.

Like most teenagers, Karley Olufson, an eighth grader at Anoka Middle School, decided to hop on the Stanley Cup trend.

"I was at school and I was like, 'Woah that water bottle is kind of cute, what is it?' and she was like, 'It's a Stanley' and I was like, 'Oh okay, I want one,'" Karley said.

So, in typical teenage fashion, Karley put the Stanley Cup on her Christmas wish list. Come Christmas morning, her dad had something else in mind.

"I opened it and it was this giant trophy and I was like, 'Did I win something? Like best daughter award?'" Karley said.
"He was like, 'It's a Stanley Cup, you've wanted this forever!' He's like 'You're so excited... isn't it great?' and I was like, 'Yeah I love it… it's amazing."

Karley and her sister Kadence didn't realize they were in the presence of "Thee Lord Stanley Cup" notably the oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes in North America and the only trophy inscribed with hockey legends who have won this coveted cup!

"Did you even know what the Stanley Cup trophy was?" asked Karley's sister Kadence.

"No, I didn't. I only watched hockey about once," Karley said.

So, Karley put on a brave face and left her dad's and went to celebrate Christmas at her mom's where she opened up yet another Stanley Cup — this time, the one she wanted.

"I was like, 'Thank you!'" Karley said. "I was so stressed out. What am I supposed to do with this Stanley if I don't have the actual one."

Kadence thought the entire ordeal was hilarious and decided to post about it on TikTok.

"I thought it was going to maybe get 30 likes and I woke up the next morning and was like I've never seen that many notifications in my life ever," Kadence said.

The video has more than 800,000 views and counting. This now-viral moment is a memory the Olufsons will never forget.

"That was funny, I was laughing so hard," Karley said.

When Karley's dad heard she wanted the Stanley Cup, he really thought his daughter was into hockey! Once her mom explained what she really wanted, they both had a good laugh about it and dad decided to go with it.

The Stanley Cup he bought is a piggy bank costing around $65 bucks.
