OAK PARK HEIGHTS, Minn. — Let's just say that 23-year-old Carly Johnson has a few things going on in her life.
This January, she was sworn in on the Oak Park Heights City Council.
She's also a first year law student at Mitchell Hamline School of Law. Oh - and she's a research assistant at the public health law center on campus.
Johnson ran unopposed in November for the city council spot, left vacant after the previous city councilman retired.
Despite no one to run against, Carly still put up campaign signs and knocked on doors.
"It’s always a little nerve wracking to put yourself out there," she said.
Carly says it's important to realize the important role that local government plays.
"I think a lot of really big issues that impact people on the day-to-day happen at the city level," Johnson said. "It’s something that people should really tap into and make sure that their voices are being heard."
What's her advice to anyone out there who feels hesitant to step into something because of their age? Go for it.
"People are going to love to see you doing what you’re passionate about. That’s what makes the world go 'round - people doing what they love to do and fighting for it," she said. "Try it. Be brave."
