MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis fire crews were on the scene of a house fire on the west bank of Minneapolis Wednesday morning.

Around 5:20 Wednesday morning, firefighters were called to a 2 1/2-story house at 1815 6th Street South for a fire that was burning between two houses.

Minneapolis Assistant Fire Chief Melanie Rucker told KARE 11 that the fire started in a dumpster or pile of rubbish and spread to the home.

Fire crews started fighting the fire inside the house but the fire spread quickly into the attic and roof. Crews had to shift their attack and moved outside to keep battling the blaze, Rucker said.

As crews poured water on the roof of the house from outside, other firefighters noticed that the neighboring house at 1813 6th Street was starting to show smoke and investigated.

At the same time, the firefighters in the home in 1815 found a buildup of gas and smoke in one of the home's walls. It caused a backdraft, or a small explosion, in the house. Two firefighters were affected by the fire and smoke that poured over them and were taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Rucker said the injured firefighters appeared to be "in good condition," also saying that they were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

As of Wednesday morning, firefighters were finishing a washdown of the house, putting out flare-ups and hotspots as needed.

Rucker said one person was at home in the house at 1815, which is also an in-home daycare, and was evacuated. The Red Cross is assisting her. No one was in the house at 1813, which Rucker said is a business, at the time of the fire.
