Minneapolis man charged in connection with 2022 salon bombing

Michael Francisco's charges stem from two incidents in which a Minneapolis hair salon was damaged, the first time, by a bomb blast in 2022.

MINNEAPOLIS — Nearly a year-and-a-half since a Minneapolis hair salon was damaged by an explosive device, a local man is facing charges.

Court documents filed on April 1 show Michael Francisco, 59, of Minneapolis was charged with one count of maliciously damaging a building engaged in interstate commerce by means of an explosive device in connection with the 2022 blast that damaged both the interior and exterior of Studio 411, a hair salon located in the city's Bryn Mawr neighborhood.

According to the criminal complaint, Ring video footage from Nov. 22, 2022, showed an adult man, later identified as Francisco, placing the explosive device on a window at the salon at about 2:49 a.m. before he fled the area and the bomb's subsequent detonation.

The complaint goes on to say it was approximately one year later, on Nov. 6, 2023, that a man, again identified as Francisco, was seen in surveillance video throwing a rock through one of the salon's windows before driving away from the scene.

Prosecutors said DNA collected from the rock and other items later connected Francisco to both incidents. Investigators then obtained a search warrant for Francisco's home, where the complaint said they found the clothing Francisco was seen wearing during the 2023 incident, in addition to multiple "explosive components," like suspected energetic powders and fuses; a .32 caliber revolver and ammunition; and methamphetamine.

Francisco had already been charged with a prior felony conviction, investigators said, prohibiting him from possessing firearms and/or ammunition at the time.

Following his first court date on Wednesday, prosecutors said Francisco will remain in custody until his formal detention hearing on April 8.
