MPD said the man fired an AR-15 rifle into the air to "celebrate the new year," before a bullet came through a window and struck the girl her below the temple.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said a Fridley man, who they believe is responsible for injuring an 11-year-old in a shooting on New Year's Day, is now in custody.

According to O'Hara, authorities learned the man was firing an AR-15 into the air to "celebrate the new year," when a bullet came through the girl's bedroom window at her home in north Minneapolis, striking her just below the temple. O'Hara said the man was jailed on potential assault and weapon possession charges, but those charges have not yet been formally filed.

Shortly following the incident, Minneapolis police released a statement saying squads arrived to the home on the 2300 block of Bryant Avenue North just after midnight, and found the girl with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

She was transported to HCMC for treatment.

A GoFundMe created by the victim's mother said the girl's older sister was in the room when she was shot, leaving them both "traumatized and in shock." She's asking for help relocating her family, saying her daughters no longer feel safe in their neighborhood.

"They don’t wanna live in the neighborhood anymore let alone have to sleep in the bedroom where it happened," the fundraiser said. "We are seeking any help in refuge for relocation."

As of Wednesday evening, the family had raised just over half of their goal.
