MPD: 'Beloved' cashier beaten to death inside grocery store

Officers tracked the suspect to a nearby apartment unit after talking to a witness, according to the release.

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minneapolis Police Department is investigating after a man was brutally killed in the city on Friday.

Officers arrived at the scene on the 200 block of Oak Grove St. at 12:55 p.m. for a report of a stabbing inside a business.

Upon arrival, officers found a 66-year-old man behind the counter who had been impaled with a golf club through his torso, according to the MPD.

Police are still investigating to determine what prompted the attack. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said it appeared that the suspect had collected some items from the store for purchase and taken them to the counter.

“It appears he then went behind the counter and then began to assault and bludgeon the individual behind the counter in a very grotesque way,” O’Hara said.

The victim was taken to the Hennepin County Medical Center where life-saving efforts were made, but he ultimately died.

The man was "an elder who had lived in this neighborhood for decades," said O'Hara.

Officers tracked the suspect to a nearby apartment unit after talking to a witness, according to the release.

The 44-year-old suspect allegedly barricaded himself inside the unit for nearly six hours before he was arrested.

The MPD was joined by negotiators, the SWAT team, the drone unit, and the bomb squad before the 44-year-old suspect was arrested.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
