MPS support professionals, school district reach tentative agreement

Union members will vote on the tentative deal May 8-10.

MINNEAPOLIS — Editor's Note: the above video first aired on April 27.

Less than a week after unionized education support professionals in Minneapolis Public School voted to authorize a strike, a tentative deal has been reached between the two parties.

“We’re raising wages and we’re creating a compensation system that recognizes the value of experience in the district. This agreement will attract more educators to our schools and encourage our current staff to stay and keep building trusting relationships with our students," said Catina Taylor, president of the ESP chapter in a release.

The union will communicate the terms of the tentative agreement to its members before details are released to the public, according to the Taylor.

"We don't get a competitive wage," said Robert Petrie, a support professional and union member told KARE 11 after the union voted to authorize a strike on April 27. "Most of our members have to work multiple jobs because they're not able to sustain life on just their ESP job."

Union members will vote on the tentative deal May 8-10.

“Our education support professionals are essential and play an important role in our student’s lives," said Minneapolis Public Schools Superintendent Lisa Sayles-Adams in a release.

The deal was the result of a 27-hour negotiation session, according to the school district.
