The Mother Baby Center draws attention to postpartum depression

According to The Mother Baby Center, a partnership between Allina Health and Children's Minnesota, as many as one in five new moms experience postpartum depression.

MINNEAPOLIS — This year will be the first Mother's Day for many women who have become new moms. But some of the new mothers may be feeling anything but special on Mother's Day.

According to The Mother Baby Center, a partnership between Allina Health and Children's Minnesota, as many as one in five new moms experience postpartum depression, which can appear anytime in the first year after birth. Symptoms can be mild or severe and include anxiety, sadness, anger and irritability, difficulty sleeping and intrusive thoughts. Without treatment, doctors say postpartum depression symptoms can hang on for months, even years.

However, postpartum mood disorders are highly treatable and not something a new mother needs to feel ashamed about. Dr. Rachel Pilliod from The Mother Baby Center joined KARE 11 News at Noon to talk about the difference between baby blues and postpartum depression, how to find help for postpartum depression and the type of treatments available.
