Girls on the Run program builds running and social skills

The program is able to provide everything from shoes to sports hijabs to girls who need them.

MINNESOTA, USA — Editor's Note: This video was originally published Sept. 28, 2023.

For elementary and middle school students, supportive friendships can be hard to find.

But not in Girls on the Run.

"Girls on the Run is an after school club where you talk about friendship and social skills and you get to exercise while doing it," said student Vivian Lorang from White Bear Lake. "And it's not just like a running club where you just run laps."

It's an eight-week program for students in grades 3-8 at 160 locations in Minnesota. Not only do students train for a 5-K, they learn valuable lessons in friendship and community.

The best part is that if you want your child to enroll in the program, they will help with costs if needed.

There's a "pay-what-you-can" model and the program is able to provide everything from shoes to sports hijabs to girls who need them. For more information, click here. Registration is open to all girls and gender-expansive youth, including homeschooled students and students from nearby schools.
