MINNEAPOLIS — A new restaurant was selected by the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board (MPRB) to be the concessions operator at Lake Nokomis.

Beginning late spring or early summer 2023, The Painted Turtle will offer "scratch-made" food and drinks such as locally made ice cream and beer as well as beachside snacks. The establishment will be partnering with vendors like La La Ice Cream and  Kramarczuks Sausage Company to serve the various refreshments.

The previous concessions operator, Sandcastle, "chose not to renew its lease" after operating in Lake Nokomis for the last decade, according to the MPRB. A selection committee for the new operator ultimately chose The Painted Turtle to take over the role, and in November MPRB's Commissioners approved a five-year lease for the restaurant beginning Jan. 1.

In addition to The Painted Turtle, Pimento Jamaican Kitchen and Lola on the Lake  are among the new restaurants and vendors set to open in Minneapolis next summer. The two eateries are set to open in the new Bde Maka Ska pavilion in 2023.
