DULUTH, Minn. — The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning on Tuesday, indicating that northeast Minnesotans are under extreme fire risk until 9 p.m.

Affected counties include Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake and St. Louis. On Monday, 13 southwestern counties were placed under a Red Flag Warning for extreme fire risk, as dry and windy conditions are prevalent statewide.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said in a release Tuesday that a Red Flag Warning means that fires of any size can spread and get out of control quickly. Residents should avoid burning piles even as small as a campfire.

The DNR recommends checking any recent burning piles to make sure the fire is completely out.

"Any spark could become a wildfire under Red Flag conditions,” DNR wildfire prevention specialist Karen Harrison said in the release.
