St. Cloud contractors band together to help veteran

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — A Vietnam veteran found himself in a dilemma last year when he paid a contractor who showed up once but never came back.

Ron Jenderseck has lived in St. Cloud for 22 years. He wanted to create a patio where his kids and grandkids could gather.

"He's a very loving guy and a very trusting guy," Ron's daughter, Sara said.

Ron met with Shane Mekeland and Ari Erickson from Landson Construction. When they heard about his heroism in serving in Vietnam and receiving a Purple Heart, they decided they needed to do something.

"We put the word out and all of a sudden I think I had about 10 contractors that all wanted a part of it. And then they asked me, how many trucks and trailers can we get in that neighborhood?" Mekeland said.

They got the job done. And, they did it all entirely for free.

"How could we not?" Erickson said.

For Ron, it's more than a porch. It's a place for his family to gather after losing his wife to cancer.

"I just want everyone to come here," he said.

A house feeling more like a home all thanks to some neighbors who stepped up.
