6 hour standoff resolves peacefully in South Saint Paul

South Saint Paul Police said they initially responded to a call of a man threatening someone with a firearm. The scene soon evolved into the standoff.

SOUTH SAINT PAUL, Minn. — A standoff was resolved peacefully Sunday night after South Saint Paul police spent more than six hours camped outside an apartment building.

South Saint Paul police said in a release that they initially responded to a reported disturbance around 3:30 p.m.. involving a man threatening someone with a firearm on the 200 block of Marie Ave.

Upon arriving, officers found a 62-year-old man with a rifle who didn't follow their commands and fled into an apartment. Officials evacuated nearby units and attempted to negotiate with the man for two hours before requesting help from the South Metro SWAT team.

SWAT officers used a chemical irritant to flush the man out of the apartment around 10 p.m. The South Saint Paul man was arrested and taken to the Dakota County Jail.

Multiple other law enforcement agencies assisted with the standoff, including the Inver Grove Heights and Mendota Heights Police Departments.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
