11-year-old in critical condition, teen in custody after shooting in St. Paul

On Saturday, officials said the 11-year-old was hospitalized after being shot in the head.

ST PAUL, Minn. — An 11-year-old boy is in critical condition after St. Paul Police suspect he may have been shot in the head by a 13-year-old girl.

According to information from St. Paul police, just before 9:00 Friday night, police were called to an address in the 800 block of Pierce Butler Route on a report of a person shot.

When officers arrived, they found a young male with a gunshot wound to the head.

Medics rushed the 11-year-old to the hospital for treatment. On Saturday afternoon police said the boy was hospitalized in critical condition at Gillette Children's Hospital in St. Paul.

Officials said officers learned that the boy had possibly been shot by a 13-year-old girl, and began to search for her. She was found and taken into custody in the 100 block of Charles Avenue, officials said.

Police said they expect the girl will be placed at the Ramsey County Juvenile Detention Center on suspicion of second-degree assault.

On Saturday afternoon, police said officers recovered two handguns from an apartment in the 800 block of Peirce Butler. A 34-year-old man was arrested and booked on suspicion of felony Possession of a Firearm by an Ineligible and Gross Misdemeanor Negligent Storage of a Firearm.

Lisa Wheeler lives in that building. She said she held that 11-year-old boy before the paramedics arrived.

"I just told him to hold on," she said. "And the police came and they took over."

Lisa believes a child absolutely should not have access to guns.

"People get mad when you take their guns away, but when kids are getting killed I think gun reform might be necessary," she said. "I should never have to see that. I don't ever want to see that again. Ever, ever. I can't. I don't want to live in a world with monsters. Kids should not be playing with guns. They should be playing with dolls."
