Ukrainians and supporters rally to say aid is needed two years after war

Hundreds marched from the Ukrainian American Community Center Saturday in Minneapolis in a show of support.

MINNEAPOLIS — On Saturday, people around the world and here in Minnesota marked a somber anniversary.

It was two years ago that Russian troops invaded Ukraine, a war that continues with no end in sight.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and four other Democratic senators traveled to Ukraine to mark the two-year anniversary. The trip comes after the Senate passed an aid package that would provide $60 billion to support Ukraine. However, that aid package remains stalled in the House.

Saturday evening, hundreds met at the Ukrainian American Community Center in Minneapolis in support of Ukrainians and additional aid.

Maria and Dmytro Hural try to teach their three-year-old about her family that is still there. They had to leave their home behind when the war began.

"War is in Ukraine still," said Maria Hural. "So we want to remind that people are dying."

They were among the crowd that marched from the center to the Stone Arch Bridge, with the Minneapolis skyline lit up in blue and yellow to light their way.

"My mom calls me in the middle of the night," said Hural. "She is scared because of missiles and that sound. I don't know what to do."

Hural said she and her family have been so supported by Minnesotans since they moved here in July 2022. But she says support now needs to turn to Ukraine.

"I want to see my Mom," she said. "I want my mom to see how my daughter is growing up."
